new documentary & 5th all-Slovenian protests against political elites and corruption

Today was the 5th all-Slovenian protests against political elites and corruption. Slovenian people haven’t given up on protests, they started in november 2012 and still continue. The protests helped change Slovenian prime minister, but that didn’t satisfy people: they want a complete change of politics and all the people involved in the system. Today was also the day I started filming a new documentary about female choir Kombinat (for English readers click HERE for more info), which sings revolutionary tunes from all over the world in original languages. They had a couple of performances today on the protests so it was a perfect set up. Through the next couple of weeks we will continue with different location shootings and later on you are welcome to the premiere of the documentary (I will keep you updated). ESSL Art Award 2013 – invitation

As you probably know already I’ve been nominated for ESSL Art Award 2013 by Essl Contemporary Arts Museum in Austria which gives award every two years to two most promising young artists in the field of fine arts. They’ve nominated 10 artists from each country, so it’s quite an important thing. Invitations arrived today, so I can officially invite you to the Slovenian opening in the Muzej Sodobne Umetnosti (Museum of Contemporary Art Slovenia) on 13th of May at 7pm to see one of my video installations (let’s keep it a surprise which one). ToBe Continued is an original concert lasting 24 hours (from 00.00 hours to the midnight of March 24th), during which musicians from many parts of the World will be connected to a website that will broadcast, live, their concerts. During this un-interrupted 24 hour marathon (ToBe Continued… in fact) each musician has at disposal a 30-minute window, thus creating a relay of sounds and rhythms that will range from the different streams of “new music”.

The event, that will cover the 24th of March, World TB Day, in its entirety, is coordinated by Antonio Della Marina, musician and computer music composer, and by Moreno Miorelli, artistic director of the annual gathering “Stazione di Topolò/Postaja Topolove”. The whole initiative is under the aegis of the Global Health Incubator, the ‘laboratory’ established in July 2009 in Topolo’ by Mario Raviglione (WHO director of Stop TB Department) to create links between the world of creativity and that of science.

The participating musicians will perform live from many different countries: from USA, Chile, New Zealand, China, Iran, Mexico, Venezuela, Japan, Canada, South Korea, Brazil, Australia, South Africa, Lebanon, Armenia, Turkey and many European countries (Russia, Ukraina, Transnistria, Poland, Bulgaria, Latvia, France, Belgium, Slovenja, Greece, Romania, Portugal, Germany, Italy, Austria, Croatia, Albania, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Far Oer, Hungary, Sweden, Denmark), creating a symbolical tour of the world with 48 stops, starting and ending in Topolò.

Anybody can listen to ToBe Continued…,as long as an internet connection is available, by connecting to the website www.stazioneditopolo.it

This year project also includes several public listening points (bars, libraries, cultural centers, art galleries, shops, all listed on the website) that will broadcast the concert.

Tuberculosis (abbreviated as TB in English and TBC in Italian) is a curable disease. However, it is often underestimated, if not totally ignored, as a major human scourge, although it is globally the leading cause of death from an infectious disease, causing the loss of 1.7 million people each year, 4000 every day, with thousands of unnecessary victims also in the richest countries every year.

The project ToBe Continued…is also part of the initiatives organized by Stop TB Italia to commemorate World TB Day. The event has the patronage of StopTB Partnershipand thanks to Eli Lilly MDR-TB Partnership and the collaboration with UNIKUM – Culture Centre of the University of Klagenfurt, that will provide the facilities for the coordination of the concerts.

New video installation: “Inspiration for inspiration for inspiration”

ABOUT: “Inspiration for inspiration for inspiration” is a video installation which plays with reflections of reality. It all began with doodles of some of the Slovenian artist (Milan Erič, Mina Fina, Saša Kerkoš, Damijan Kracina, Lojze Logar, Erik Mavrič, Anja Medved, Miha Perne, Leon Zuodar) which were the main inspiration. I was playing with the idea of doodles: they are created in the process of thinking, they inspire artists and they are just a beginning of a new work. Doodles are just a brief sketches of what will once be – or not. So I was playing with the idea how to do a video installation which will be just the inspiration – a doodle – for new works. I didn’t do doodles for it, I just used existing ones from Slovenian artists and changed them through reflections. Mirrors represent different views of people once they see doodles or new ideas and through different reflections they are changed, they become different subjective reality. They reflect into each other and sometimes their path is crossed – like the actual reflection from mirrors. But often they also become different projections and in the end they return and reflect back onto the author and they become new inspirations. I put myself in the installation because I feel the mirrors around me when I interact with different artists and people in real life and I collect all the reflections and projections which are later changed in new works and new inspirations. All our thoughts are the products of everything we experience through life, through people, through small everyday events and through different feelings. Every inspiration is a reflection of reflection of reflection of reflection….

Critique of my work published in annual art journal / Issue 1: LAND / Singapore

One of my recent works FREEDOM 2.0 (video installation) is analysed by art critique Lawrence Chin in Singaporean annual art journal ISSUE 1: LAND. It is not published yet but I had the chance to see one of the first copies today!

I was pleased to read a positive critique and dr. Chin reviewed it the right way so I’m glad my art works speak the message I want.

I was cooperating with artist Zvonka T Simčič on this project and here are some photos from today’s exhibition opening in Gallery Tobačna 001: Silent Power & Traces.

Zvonka T Simčič is presenting her new project.

Her new project has been developed in cooperation with Franci Cegnar, Ksenija Jus, Alenka Spacal, Nada Žgank, Ženski pevski zbor Kombinat, Bogdana Herman, Valerija Zabret (Valérie Wolf Gang), Borut Pust and Adam Simčič.

Zvonka T Simčič is one of the few female visual artists whose works address the theme of motherhood in an extremely engagé manner. In her innovative performance Doulas “ad utero, ab ovo” (2007) she critically addressed the problem of the (non-)possibility of single women being artificially inseminated, such that by means of the image of herself as the pregnant Virgin Mary she presented her own experience of insemination, pregnancy, and child birth. The decision to be artificially inseminated represents, in a country where such right is not ensured to single women, a courageous and bold act of an autonomous woman, who has, by means of such a gesture, also rejected the subordination of women to the male hegemony with regard to reproduction.

Following the birth of her son Adam, in New Allegories, 2008, 2009 Zvonka T Simčič addressed the period after giving birth, the role of a single mother, and the treatment of single-parent families by the state. In her latest video, entitled Traces, 2012, she further develops her previously highlighted topics and by means of the motif of Fair Vida communicates to Slovene society that she disagrees with the discriminatory outcome of the referendum on the Family Code, by which rights were denied to children from more liberal family forms. In a country where nobody cares about the rights of a minority, Simčič exposes her own child to the audience in an activist-artistic manner. Having the position of a precarious worker and freelance artist, Simčič encounters numerous existential problems in her role as a single mother; she presents herself through the image of Fair Vida while carrying her child along the edge of a hill into the world – and assumes the full weight of responsibility.

Zvonka T Simčič courageously fights for the rights of women and children together with her female colleagues from different fields of art. For a number of years now her efforts have been backed by the artistic photographs of Nada Žgank. And for the purposes of the present performance she has been joined by the singer-songwriter Ksenija Jus, with her topical version of the tragic Fair Vida, who becomes a victim of capitalist criminals. Furthermore, she also enjoys the comradeship and support of the women in the female choir Kombinat, who by means of the collective power of a group sing out revolutionary songs of rebellion from all over the world and who believe in solidarity, heart-felt sincerity, courage, and social justice.

Simčič’s Fair Vida did not radically sacrifice either her own life or that of her son for a world more just. The author is not pushing her characters along the edge of a hill into ruin, but is rather saving them from a dead-end situation by means of a will that combines a certain yearning and struggle.

By means of her artworks Simčič fights in a very unique way when, as an artist and mother impersonating Fair Vida, she walks, with her child in her arms, through the meadow of yearning towards a more just and better world.

Alenka Spacal

Simčič Zvonka is a painter, performer, photographer, video artist and the head of the Independent Institute for Visual Research. She graduated in 1994 and specialised at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana in 1996.
